In February 2020, SCDT held their first community afternoon. This was a free event run at Stromness Community Centre, with a variety of activities on offer throughout the afternoon.
We hired a bouncy castle from local group Stromness Mums and Toddlers, there was table tennis, carpet bowls, arts and crafts, and the snooker and pool tables available. Local group Stromness Rocks also ran a rock painting activity.
The afternoon saw locals and visitors enjoying the activities, or just stopping in for some soup and sandwiches, a coffee and a home bake. As well as bringing people together, there was also the opportunity to meet SCDT board members and their development officer, learn about their projects, ask questions and share ideas.
Following the success of the first afternoon we had hoped to continue these events on a monthly basis, but unfortunately due to COVID-19 restrictions this has not been possible. Instead, we are investigating other ways to deliver these community events.
Alongside working on our own projects and organising events, we also work in partnership with other organisations.
In 2019 we were part of ‘Whats Next for Stromness‘, a partnership project between Orkney Islands Council and Stromness Community Council, facilitated by Planning Aid Scotland, a charitable social enterprise. The project involved a series of events for local people to meet and discuss ideas, priorities and aspirations for the future of Stromness. All of the comments and feedback were compiled and used to create a shared vision and action plan for Stromness. This document is called a local place plan and will be used by OIC to feed into their development plans for the town over the next 5 – 10 years. SCDT will use the document to inform their own development plans, ensuring projects remain in line with the priorities highlighted in the document.
