The Stromness Community Business Forum (SCBF) was established in 1996 with two main objectives:

i)     To promote business and community activities in Stromness and surrounding areas
ii)     To provide facilities and services for the benefit of members of the forum

Since 1996 SCBF have supported many local events and represented the businesses in the town on various consultations that impact the community. We work in partnership with Stromness Community Development Trust ensuring a cohesive strategy for the support of Stromness businesses.

SCBF hold an Annual General Meeting at which committee members are voted in.  The committee meet at least once every quarter, or more frequently for any pressing matters.
The minutes of meetings and AGMs are available on the Documents page. Please get in touch using the Contact Us page if you need to.

Past and present Projects

One of SCBF’s earlier activities was the development of the original StromnessOrkney website, used to promote local businesses and other organisations to help encourage tourism and commercial activity in Stromness. The website launched in November 2012 and served a very useful purpose over the years. But with Orkney.com gradually providing more of the business and tourism needs of the town, it was decided something new was needed. The website here was designed by Stromness Community Development Trust to replace it.

From 2009 – 2014 SCFB supported the work of the Townscape Heritage Initiative, as well as other regeneration initiatives aimed at securing the town’s long-term future. Funding facilitated projects such as building repair grants, repaving the street, grants to bring vacant properties back into use, and training and education courses and materials that considered the history and heritage of the town. To find out more about the Stromness Townscape Heritage Initiative (STHI), please follow the link below.

SCBF also organise annual events such as the Stromness Christmas Bonanza and the late night shopping and Mulled Wine Sunday event. Both events will make a welcome return again this year, with the bonanza launching on Saturday 14th November. Any business that would like to take part or receive more information, please get in touch using the Contact Us button in the menu above.

SCBF purchase a Christmas tree for Stromness each year. This is displayed at the Pier Head and lit at a ceremony at the end of November, providing a festive focus for the community to enjoy.
